Some engines are shipped from Briggs & Stratton with or without oil. Always make sure that the engine has oil. If you start the engine without oil, it will be damaged beyond repair and will not be included under the warranty. First, you need to access the valve cover. This will be the silver cover on top of the engine head. It will have OHV stamped into it and is held on with four screws/bolts. These screws are usually 3/8" or 7/16" hex head and are removed using a socket and ratchet. There is a gasket between the valve cover and head.

Briggs manual 272144 contradicts itself on the pages that show the cylinder numbering. The engine is turned around in another view, but the cylinder numbers were not corrected to follow. I looked in two other Briggs manuals that I have for twins and # 1 cylinder is marked as the closer one to the flywheel in both manuals.
