The extended versions are so much better than the theatrical DVD you don't even want to give your theatrical versions away to charitybecause you know you're robbing someone else of the experience of the extended versions. So you just throw them away in the trash, and although it hurts, you can rest assured knowing you did the right thing.
The Extended Edition DVD includes the following changes to the film. During the prologue, more is shown of the ambush and death of Isildur, emphasizing his betrayal by the Ring. After the prologue, we open with a close-up of the Middle Earth map and pan to hear Bilbo writing his book, starting with a description of hobbits.
Some reviews have suggested that it's less distracting on 1080p than in 4k. Although if it's a good upscale job, maybe it'll still be noticeable. Thanks. Also, the price differences crack me up -- literally the remastered 1080p theatrical trilogy is $19.99 USD on bestbuy -- less than many solo movies in 4K! Lol.
